I'm re-attaching some old Chrompack Gas Clean Moisture Filter columns (007971) to dry gases prior to supplying my thermal analysis (TGA/DSC) system. I've sourced some new Drierite to replace the old colour-indicating moisture desiccant which forms ~50% column but how do I regenerate the white sphere media, which I assume adsorbs traces of organics etc ? I thought I had read that heating to 450degC would do this...but now cant find the reference.

Just a thought, you could run a piece of the white stuff on the DCS and TGA.... look for weight lose for the TGA and for thermal changes in DSC. I once was working during graduate school part time and had to fix a dryer unit for a company. The whole thing was a mess. Anyway I did take what was a zeolite desiccant, put it in a humid environment for a white and then used DSC and TGA to see how the zeolite performed. I for one had to know was the dryer regenerating the zeolite correctly. Turns out the dryer was tool cold and about half the heating elements needed replacing. So I told them either you replace the heating elements for the dryer so the zeolites can actually be regenerated (drive off the bound water) or work at the current lower temperature and get yourself some new desiccant that can be regenerated wit the dryer in its current state. In the end we got new heating elements, which was the right thing to do. Put some organics on the white stuff to treat it as if it needed to be regen. You can get an idea of how your dryrite works too. Just make sure your temps are above what you find. This way you know if 450C is above your observations then the 450C makes sense.
In support of John, main thing I would do is get some local zeolite molecular sieves (any organic lab would have those) and dry them in vacuum at 450C or so. Transfer warm to the housing after it's been cleaned and baked dry. Not much $$ in those, so proper maintenance of zeolites are key. I don't bother recovering old unknown materials, even if they're 'clean'. Much cheaper from an equiptment risk standpoint to recycle the old stuff and put new treated sieves in.
