First, think about what phenomena in the world are interesting to you. Second, read widely in the literature while thinking if a paper's topic may be interesting to you and also worth further study. Third, go to conferences and seminars.
It would help if you studied widely in the area of Geography that interests you most. From the literature, you will be able to see research gaps that exist in your area of interest, and then zero on such areas. Furthermore, there is the need to consult your would-be advisor for assistance and guidance on the proposed focus of the research. Attendance at seminars/conferences/workshops will also help you to benchmark others and increase the network of experts that can be consulted.

Hello, I believe the first step is to read widely to secure an area of interest and venture into it. You have to know and like your research and in that way it will be easier to do well.
I would say: scientific relevance is key. Find a knowledge gap that your thesis can address so that your work adds upon the existing literature.
But personal motivation is just as important if not more - at least it was for me. You are going to spend four (?) years on this, you will struggle at some point. What topic really interests you? What motivates you to keep going? The more intrinsic your motivation, the more your topic drives you, the better you'll be able to keep going forward and not give up!
