Greetings fellow researches. After thoroughly exhausting literature i am unable to find any chemical etchant for Niobium carbide. I am trying to etc NbC-Ni based cermets.Anyone with ething carbides has any idea?
i) You can (reactively) dissolve niobium carbide (NbC) with: (i) conc. (95―98 wt%) H2SO4 (boiling, ≥1h), (ii) conc. (~86 wt%) H3PO4 (boiling; 1 h), (iii) conc. (~74 wt%) HNO3 (boiling; 1 h), (iv) conc. H2SO4 + conc. H3P04 (1:1 v/v; boiling; 1 h), (v) conc. HNO3 + conc. (48 wt%) HF (1:4 v/v; room temperature; 1 day) ― time merely indicates time scale; boiling should proceed under reflux.
ii) You may consider etching nickel with conc. HNO3 + H2O (3:7 v/v) at room temperature, what may take approx. 1 min; or by using less conc. HNO3 with added NH4NO3 (or slowly added ammonia, citric acid, or EDTA) ― time merely indicates time scale.
