I agree, the effects of climate change is largely dominated in the literature by marine studies. That being said, I think there are a lot of studies in inland waters that are beginning to unravel the intricacies of climate change effects on these delicate ecosystems...perhaps us freshwater researchers need to be more willing to associate these studies with climate change implications.

Seemingly simple things like extended summers in certain regions can extend the time until lakes experience turnover well into the fall, therefore creating more instances hypoxia in the benthic zones. More extreme variation in wetting/drying events can induce enhanced shoreline erosion, more turbid waters, and variations in runoff from munciple stormwater drains unable to cope with these intense rainfall events. Drying events can lead to large amounts of decaying organic matter that inevitably leads to highly reduced conditions as the microbial populations attempt to break them down. Even things like more UV radiation due to less ice-cover can have dramatic effects on not only upper-level organisms, but also on the phototrophs in these freshwater systems reliant on this energy source. Extended periods of time before ice cover could and likely is inducing shifts in the natural energy metabolism of phototrophs vs chemotrophs, which could be effecting the natural equilibrium of freshwater ecosystems going into the winter season.

I think this area of research is extremely pressing and should be a research priority moving forward. Our precious freshwater resources need the same sort of attention as it's marine counterparts, as they are arguably no less important.

Keep in mind that the research that has been done may not apply quite the same anymore with new factors related to climate change beginning to show. Such as the cycles no longer applying due to a disturbance which may alter the cycle.
