CBS C699T is a synonymous variant. People homozygous for this mutation have significantly reduced metabolite ratio of homocysteine to cystathionine compared to heterozygous and wild-type individuals.

The CBS protein is not altered in any way because it is a silent mutation, so why the reduced homocysteine concentration? Does the C699T mutation lead to increased protein expression? Or ???

Anyone know what the answer is?
