A cause is an event, that has an effect, which is also an event and may in turn be a cause of another event. Causation is the process by which a cause causes its effect. A chain of casually related events (i.e. a chain of events in a cause-effect relationship) can also be referred to as a causal process. If you want to bring logic into the story, that would be causal explanation, in which reasons are given for why one event caused another, typically by citing laws of nature or lawlike generalizations.
