Does anyone here work as a scientific illustrator? I'd like to ask how you got started, what software you use, and what is the best way to get your foot in the door? How many hours a week do you spend on this?
After finishing my doctoral studies in chemistry, I started as a full-time freelance for scientific illustration and visualization. I think a good start would be to study cover artworks of the journals you like. Either begin working with vector graphics (illustrator, inkscape), pixel graphics (photoshop, gimp) or 3D-Modelling (Cinema4D, Blender3D). There are loads of great tutorials out there.
