Hello, I am currently synthesizing chalcone derivatives and when I recrystallized the product after synthesis, i found this sticky caramel like residue at the bottom and side of my beaker. Usually when something goes wrong it oils out but this time it caramelized. Any reason why?
Muhammad Izz Muhamad Safian It depends on may factors (nucleation rate, melting point, lattice energy, solvate formation, etc.). Caramel or oil does not make much difference. If it cannot be isolated and crystallized properly, it is a problem. If this "caramel" fall out of a hot solution, try very slow cooling with magnetic sitrring bar. If nothing happens, try ultrasonification and scratch with a spatula. Sometimes, prolonged storage in a fridge can be helpful with occasionally scratching or ultrasonification. If nothing helps, change the solvent system.
