The most basic issue is not about merely teaching sustainability. That, of course, is quite important to our world. However, the context in which sustainability is taught is crucial. If that context is within the common and current "crazy random" culture, children are already "swimming upstream", against the tide of Big Corporate's dark river of planetary despoiling and destruction. In the context of a Wisdom Culture, however, it's a very different story. The basic textbook would then likely be, THE FIRST THREE STAGES OF LIFE. As such, children would learn to love all beings, to respect and honor and feel all beings as a unity, as already one with them, as family.
We adults must create that Wisdom Culture for the sake of all children. We can at least begin by studying that text. This, then, is where it starts.
Thank you for your sounding comment. I agree on the importance of context when we talk about sustainability. since it is a context sensitive concept. It seems that children's of today are immersed in a culture where consumerism and commercialization are driving and controlling their life. On the other hand, we are promoting children as agents of change towards a sustainable life. We are talking about their capacity to be part of the endeavor towards a sustainable future. Are children at stake? I would be happy to hear your reflection on this. It would be great to hear more about the notion of wisdom culture too.
