The issues you raised are highly controversial and subjected to vigorous debates and contestation. 

From my understanding (I may not be comprehensive), "sustainable agriculture" (and related concepts such sustainable intensification of agriculture, sustainable agricultural intensification, etc.) is an "umbrella" concept which can be depicted as "producing (or producing more) today while conserving or saving the resources (e.g.: land) for tomorrow"; that is ways to produce more foods for current population (which is growing rapidly) but at the same time thinking not destroying resources that the upcoming generations will use to produce their foods; all these from social, economic, ecological and ethical (more recently) perspectives or lens. 

Under "sustainable agriculture" umbrella, there are various concepts or paradigms including:

• organic agriculture or farming,
• agroecological farming (agroecology)
• diversified farming
• green agriculture,
• eco-efficient farming
• ecological intensification
• permaculture
• SRI (now SCI)
• etc.

All are saying more or less the same thing ("sustainable agriculture") but in different ways sometime contradictory. I have read a number of papers suggesting GMOs as paths for sustainable agriculture, creating strong debates and discussions (in the various journals where the papers were published) among the readers, authors, and editorial boards.

In addition to that, What is the measurement of sustainability, what are the indicators, are indicators accurate to measure the sustainability, what is the weight of each indicators in different agriculture ecosystems are also some other controversial discussion ongoing among experts.
