I am asking for you recommendation: I need a book on analytical chemistry in environmental sciences. As a non-chemist (a biologist) I have some basic chemistry knowledge but not nearly enough to start off with a book written for chemists. At this point I am a bit fed up reading publications (be it reviews or research reports), which mostly assume a high level of chemistry understanding and constantly feeling like I make half-baked conclusions due to my lack of knowledge.

Indeed, there are specific good books in Analytical Chemistry for environmental science. Nevertheless, Chemistry is an exact science; knowing its bases in a detailed manner allows you to apply it in any work field.
As an essential reading, with all vital concepts treated in a very didactic way, I will suggest the book: Quantitative Chemical Analysis, Daniel C. Harris, W. H. Freeman and Company, NY, ISBN 0-7167-2881-8.
This book aims to give the reader the physical bases of analytical chemistry, mainly how those principles are applied in environmental and life sciences.
The language is simple, precise and initially intended for biological sciences, with very comprehensive simple language, with no need for previous in deep analytical chemistry concepts to follow the chapters.

I would suggest Environmental Analytical Chemistry by Fifield and Haines (ISBN 0632053836). It does not assume a background in either pure chemistry or biology but provides a broad introduction into the principles and also application within the area of environmental sciences. The only issue is that the current edition is 2000 so will be outdated on some of the instrumental analysis discussion.

No matter what ever is your research field. if you are willing to get knowledge about analysis, perticularly about different analytical reagents, methods of preperation of reagent solutions, methods to handle analytical instruments, calibration, cleaning etc.,It is best to refer any pharmacopoeia. I suggest to refer Indian Pharmacopoeia 2007 as it is available on PDFdrive (free). Only thing is that you have to first learn how to refer it. For this, first you have to go through various appendices given in the book and see what is given in which appendix. Once you know this then only you will be able to find out the desired details.
