I would like to start my first animal based experimental study. I chose multiple sclerosis. Can anyone provide a source summarizing different MS mouse models?
There are two models: the experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) and the cuprizone-induced global demyelination.
EAE Model is good one and complicated also.
Different models are available based on what you would like to study or evaluate with your treatments.
1. EAE which is very common and most commonly used to study the complex pathology-Inflammation and demyelination
2. Toxin induced demyelination models using Cuprizone (only induce in the brain but not in the spinal cord)
3. LPC induced focal demyelination lesion model
4. Viral induced MS models.
2 and 3 models are mainly used to study the treatments targeting demyelination and remyelination for MS.
But there is no animal model that could simulate clinical human MS to the extent of 100%.
I wish you good luck for your studies.
