Both H2S and CO2 are weakly acidic molecules. Hence, if the surface of your adsorbent has basic sites it would adsorb favorably these molecules. Therefore, you need to probe the availability of surface basic sites on the test adsorbent, as well as their strength.

Other components in the biogas may compete with CO2 and H2S.

The source of the hydrochar and treatment conditions (pressure, temperature, time) probably affects its structure, pore size and selectivity. Hydrochar is quite a new adsorbent, so not much data on it particularly for gas adsorption. I attach a paper on rice hydrochar. What is your main driver - is it removing H2S and/or CO2 from biogas or evaluating use of a cheap new adsorbent material, or both?

You should study competitive adsorption of CO2 and H2S on a given adsorbent. If CO2 competes successfully for the adsorption sites, then the adsorbent is a better CO2-adsorbent than H2S, and vice-versa.
