I write a thesis about emotional mistreatment and neglect. I'm searching for a good articles about for example patronizing, infantilization, elder speak, neglect, etc.. Thank you.
You would find a number of good resources and network of colleagues with whom to consult in the Int'l Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse: www.inpea.net/
See my publications above. I have 2 articles where I discuss ethical dilemmas in care of older people. I talk about ethical ideals and ethical opportunities.
Oh, J., Kim, H.S., Martins, D., Kim, H., 2006. A study of elder abuse in Korea. International Journal of Nursing Studies 43 (2), 203-214.
Naughton, C., Drennan, J., Lyons, I., Lafferty, A., Treacy, M., Phelan, A., O'Loughlin, A., Delaney, L., 2011. Elder abuse and neglect in Ireland: results from a national prevalence survey. Age and ageing, afr107.
Sooryanarayana, R., Choo, W., 2013. A review on the prevalence and measurement of elder abuse in the community. Trauma Violence Abuse 14 (4), 316-325.
There are lots of credible articles on this topic but if you fail to use the right terms, it might come up with a 0 result. Go to Cochrane Database, you will come up with something you can be sure of. Example of one I searched is "Interventions for preventing abuse in the elderly" Choo, W. Y. (2012). Interventions for preventing abuse in the elderly. Cochrane Database Of Systematic Reviews, (1), doi:10.1002/14651858.CD010321. Another is, "Domestic Elder Abuse (Persons with Mental Health Problems): Clinical Management: Planning, Interventions and Follow-up (Nurses; Rural and Remote Areas) by Goh , Christine. This is found in Joanna Briggs Institute EBP Database. ProQuest is another good source for such article. Bear in mind that you can not obtain result with the whole topic plucked into the search, so break it into fragments of search terms and you will have a rich combination of results for your paper. Wish you success Julie
Praise makes a helpful suggestion but I would quibble on 2 points.
i) The Cochrane Library / Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR) is primarily concerned with studies of treatment (effectiveness / diagnosis). Descriptive studies fall outside it's remit. Therefore it may not be the best source for all questions you might have on this topic (for example prevalence)
ii) Although a review must meet some basic requirements to be included in the CDSR there is no absolute guarantee of quality. It is a database of published reviews. While the Cochrane reviews are developed and conducted according to strict methods studies indexed in CDSR may not have been. You always need to be open to the potential limitations of published studies / reviews that you use.
You may be right Peter, most nursing research is on treatment and intervention but if Julie needs articles on prevalence, these websites may be helpful; http://gerontologist.oxfordjournals.org/content/28/1/51.short, http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2804623/. Better still just go to google, view the scholarly articles and govt. websites, you will find credible journal on prevalence. Thanks Peter for quick observation.
Passive and Active Neglect: With passive and active neglect the caregiver fails to meet the physical, social, and/or emotional needs of the older person. The difference between active and passive neglect lies in the intent of the caregiver. With active neglect, the caregiver intentionally fails to meet his/her obligations towards the older person. With passive neglect, the failure is unintentional; often the result of caregiver overload or lack of information concerning appropriate care-giving strategies.
Physical Abuse: Physical abuse consists of an intentional infliction of physical harm of an older person. The abuse can range from slapping an older adult to beatings to excessive forms of physical restraint (e.g. chaining).
Material/Financial Abuse: Material and financial abuse consists of the misuse, misappropriation, and/or exploitation of an older adults material (e.g. possessions, property) and/or monetary assets.
Psychological Abuse: Psychological or emotional abuse consists of the intentional infliction of mental harm and/or psychological distress upon the older adult. The abuse can range for insults and verbal assaults to threats of physical harm or isolation.
Sexual Abuse: Sexual abuse consists of any sexual activity for which the older person does not consent or is incapable of giving consent. The sexual activity can range from exhibitionism to fondling to oral, anal, or vaginal intercourse.
Violations of Basic Rights: Violations of basic rights is often concomitant with psychological abuse and consists of depriving the older person of the basic rights that are protected under state and federal law ranging from the right of privacy to freedom of religion.
Self Neglect: The older person fails to meet their own physical, psychological, and/or social needs.
