It really depends on the number of students. If you have small classes you can follow Ahed´s proposal. Integrate them into your "socio-organic structure".
If you have classes of hundred or more students, integration in personal nearness is impossible. Here the professor must show by his lectures the knowledge, understanding for student´s problems and he must avoid artificial distance.
In both cases, he must be an example for good and integer science.
If they feel that you love them before they love you, you observe a magic influence.

Generally prizing myself on being a rational being, I renounce my so-called rationality to answer Marwan´s splendid question. When I teach literature or philosophy, my enthusiasm for the subject matter dominates everything: I get to class early, lovingly answer questions, make my presentations a Socratic dialogue about the theme I love, and (I´m afraid) lose track of time and may end class a bit late. Outside of class I see students as much as possible about the theme I love. In addition, I involuntarily speak at a higher volume than when talking about ordinary affairs. Am I a professor capable of making a lasting influence? Not a few of my former students have told me so, but I never set out to impress them on purpose.

I think that a professor that give not only technical knowledge, but a deep conceptual one, that students like and think in terms of this. In general the technical knowledge should be decorated by historical, conceptual and philosophical remarks. These make an a lasting influence.

Probably many of us needed different capabilities in influential professors in the past. In my case most influential professors, supervisor I admired and appreciated had same high level of personal ethics and the knowledge from the field. They were also highly creative in thinking and spoke foreign languages (French, English, German). I will remember when the new technology with computer era came, my best supervisor, Professor Andrzej Wojciechowski (Professor of Art and also in Special Education) learned constantly and had always recent technological gadgets. He in flexible way adapted to the modern technological demands of academic work. He is retired now since a few years from Nicolaus Copernicus University but still actively working on Polish private colleges and in the practice of the field of intellectual disabilites. He is calling me sometime with the sam sense of humor.

I think it is related to professor and students passion toward the classroom and learning itself. I think it is important not to lose sight of the fact that passion takes place at all stages of life and in many venues other than schools, and making a lasting influence in the lives of the professor's students.
Dear @Marwan, the lasting influence in the student's lives most often comes from who professors are rather than what they teach! During graduate study and Ph.D study, such influence is very reach, we do often stay in touch, make family meetings and develop our relations!

Well, it is not easy, or even impossible to describe such a professor! However when you meet one, you recognise him immediately!
Who enlighten the students by providing them with sound knowledge and help in their mental skill development.
Such a Professor teaches "concepts" instead of symbols. Teaches historical roots for concepts and mostly, there is a mystic connection with all students! At times, class and teacher is ONE!
