Research in neuroscience and psychology over the last decade and a half has reported that most mental processes occur at an unconscious level and that "thinking" involves problem solving. When the brain is not engaged in problem solving, it enters a "default mode" that involves reminiscence. In addition, the understanding that the brain is embodied and related research have indicated that we are not very good at self-reflection, which traditionally has aimed to provide understanding of our personal identity. In light of these findings, on what basis do composition teachers continue to emphasize assignments that call for self-reflection with the goal of helping students "know who they are"?
