For example, scale built up in a boiler- EDS analysis shows presence of Ca as the major inorganic component. How can I identify if it is Calcium oxide or calcium carbonate?
Well, the best way to distinguish Calcium Oxide and Calcium Carbonate from the sample will be to do an X-Ray Diffraction analysis of the sample. The nature of peaks for both Calcium Oxide or Calcium Carbonate is pretty different and hence it will be easy for you to differentiate and identify which phase is present. XRD will precisely reveal if any or both the above compounds are present. Shape of the sample and microscopic non homogeneity does not affect XRD results. Additionally, sample preparation is pretty easy for XRD and also the results are obtained in few minutes compared to exhaustive sample preparation and time consuming EBSD scan.
