Question: Can we use Big Data Analytics to Automate / Replace Manual Literature Review that are conducting by Researchers? E.g. checking reliability of an instrument based on multiple research conducted previously, analyze a conceptual framework / research model & derive its underpinning theory / theories / theoretical frameworks adopted etc.
Yes we can do this.
We can summarize documents, we can apply topic modeling, extract most important words / terms, similarity between documents can be calculated, existing tools and techniques used for a particular problem can be extracted etc.
My answer is yes and no.
Yes when it is about data that are electronically available and logically structured.
No when it is about data that are not (yet) electronically available. In a number of disciplines the important knowledge has been published in the pre-electronic era and can still be of major importance.
Secondly; non-logical or even crazy relations can be of importance and I am not convinced that these can be discovered by Big Data analysis. I am convinced that the human brain is still necessary for detecting these - sometimes - important relationships.
Thirdly (and may be most important): only - experienced - humans can make the distinction between good/trustworthy and bad/not trustworthy data. Remember the old saying: garbage in - garbage out!
I would say yes to some extend. Modern text analythics is indeed able to analyze and compare texts. However it would need some effort to build models that detect different methods and compares the circumstances in which they are used.
The search for sources and with that the posibility to make sure that there are correct citations is already in practice.
The problem and main critic that I see with useing big data analythics is the same as with current peer review. Since the evaluation of a paper will be based on current reserach it will (as it is now too) be difficult to make new game chnaging work and get this published if nothing like this exists in current research since now. Which will result in less ground braking research.
yes we can use the Big data for our convenience however, replacing manual data needs careful thinking as it can as good at times.
My answer we can... but logical the algorithm created for the data analyse, have to work onto base something similar with mathematical induction...
