Semiconducting nanoparticles can be classified as QDs, Q wires and Q wells. I have doubt whether this quantum confinement is only in semiconductors. Is this aclassification based on confinement is possible in carbon materials or any conductors or any material other than semiconductors.
Quantum confinement can be achieved in many different ways. Heterostructures in semiconductors use potential barriers between different materials to create energy wells in 0, 1, and 2D. Similarly, carbon based materials like graphene, CNT, and fullerene also achieve confinement in 2, 1, and 0D. Here, vacuum itself is the potential barrier to form energy wells in different dimensions. Basically, what you have said is technically correct.
