In Algeria, the fight against desertification is a priority for the government, the Green Dam or the "Green Wall" launched in the early 1970s, along 1,500 kilometers and 20 kilometers wide in some cases is to protect the northern country of desertification thus constituting a great barrier against desertification and desert encroachment against which reduces increasingly pastures steppe zones. The program of the Directorate General of Forests fight against desertification concerns the extension and rehabilitation of the Green Dam on 100,000 ha, the rehabilitation of the alfa grass, protecting rangelands and development of Saharan agriculture around oasis
Can - we know the main treatments in order of priority to stope method of this disastrous phenomenon?
Rehabilitation of desertified landscapes, under the biogeochemical system mindset, requires that processes that accumulate resources be reintroduced, thus providing a rational procedure in restoration of desertified landscapes. The approach explicitly seeks to retain resources by ecological processes.[1,2,3] Once the analysis of resource regulation system has been completed and the most affected process identified, remedial efforts can begin. For example, Rhodes and
Ringrose-Voase[19] deduced that ponding water on swelling clay soils would eventually result in open, friable soils with high infiltration and water store through swelling and shrinking processes. Tongway and Ludwig[2] used piles of branches arranged on the contour line to trap water, sediment, and organic matter to effect substantial improvements to a range of soil properties, permitting perennial grasses to self-establish. Both these procedures were effective because each had identified the critical biophysical process to be ameliorated in their respective landscapes.
Attempting to revegetate desertified areas by simply reseeding without understanding both the current and the required edaphic properties needed for the desired vegetation mix frequently results in unexplained failure.
