I'm working on a research and I need references to studies, papers, web pages, etc., to know how a computer based system could in the future detect when a student is not understanding a topic of a lecture by detecting the emotions expressed in a student's face. So, imagine you are a Professor and you are explaining a new concept to the class. Maybe you see on your students' faces a confusion or surprise feeling that tells you they aren't understanding well the concept you are explaining. That's what I need, I need a source, reference to a paper or any oficial source of information to proof that what I'm saying aren't just word, but it is proven by researches. I want to prove that certain emotions can tell us the weaker knowledge points of students. All I've found is about how positive/negative emotions affect academic achievement, performance, etc., but I want to focus on the association of weak knowledge points with emotions, how we may know a student isn't understanding a topic by the emotion he is expressing.

Becoming overwhelmed with multiple responsibilities has led some students to question their ability to carry out everything required by school, work, and family. can lead to stress reactions.
Differences in personal characteristics will influence their academic performance by either creating barriers to learning material or, on the contrary, helping to complete the course successfully. Studies to determine which factors affect the process of dropping out of online courses held as part of distance learning programs show that academic performance depends on students’ sociodemographic characteristics (gender, age) and level of preparation, as well as psychological parameters like metacognitive self-regulation and locus of control A variety of factors have been identified as barriers to being admitted to an online program and successful course performance. Student characteristics (i.e. demographics) and course’s characteristics (i.e. academic workload) are important aggregate factors that can affect retention and remaining in class.
The academic performance of online students can be affected by positive and negative emotions. Yet, the same emotion can be experienced in different ways. As an example, specific activities will produce different cognitive emotions. In addition to the activity, the context of an emotion might be related to a student’s belief in their self-efficacy. Online academic performance is a complex combinations of academic skills, emotions and other variables that create the combination to do well or not. Risk factors by themselves do not mean failure. An additional factor is receiving attention; the area of Grit.
Essentially, the defining characteristic of Grit is perseverance. Additionally, students who exhibit grit will persevere in order to overcome barriers and achieve academic success. Grit is often measured by a self-report assessments. Grit is related to many personality traits including, self-regulation and discipline, as well as resilience, Grit is a non-cognitive trait that seems to be related to academic performance; even more than Intelligence Quotient (IQ). It is reasoned that higher IQ can mean less grit. Students with lower IQ’s tend to work harder and persevere more. The characteristics of grit can be developed, and academic outcomes can be improved.

have you perhaps looked at Daniel Goleman’s work on emotional intelligence? I found his book on Focus really insightful. We live in the world of constant partial attention. In my view just because a student has a pleasant facial expression does not necessarily mean he/she is focused on the lecture. They may be thinking of a nice weekend ahead instead. The body language - sometimes- and not just a face could be a better source of information on the emotions. I also would like to recommend you get familiar with research and work of Lisa Feldman Barrett and her book How Emotions Are Made: The Secret Life of the Brain.
