I have a mixed phase ternary alloy, I want to confirm the presence of binary and ternary phases by taking DTA thermograms of individual metals and their respective binary.
Is DTA thermogram a characteristic feature of a certain alloy? Can I confirm the presence of binary phases in my ternary sample using thermal analysis?
Ahmed Y. Yassin, from my XRD I'm having confusion regarding the presence of mixed phases, what I saw in some papers (Perricone, M. J. & Dupont, J. N. Effect of composition on the solidification behavior of several Ni-Cr-Mo and Fe-Ni-Cr-Mo alloys. Metall and Mat Trans A 37, 1267–1280 (2006).) they have used it to determine the presence of secondary eutectic phases using DTA thermograms.
So taking example of my ternary alloy say, A-B-C, I have binary A-B etc will that melting point be reflected in the DTA curve?
DTA cannot be used for phase identification. You need to include more methods: XRD, SEM-EDS, etc. Based on all results and all methods, the characterization will be successful and complete.
Aleksandra Milosavljevic I have done SEM EDX and narrowed it down to a mixture of Binary phases with different eutectic melting points.
My idea is to make binary phases and identify the DTA thermograms, then with my prepared sample. Then comparing the thermograms, I can identify the presence of binary phases from the deviation from baseline of the final samples and correlate with with prepared pure binary phase.
Pritam Chakraborty DTA will show characteristic temperatures (phase transformation), and if you have XRD, than you'll have crystallographic structure as well
Aleksandra Milosavljevic the problem with XRD is that, there is no reference data card or pattern to match by material to completely.
Pritam Chakraborty of course there is not. That's why characterization is so complex and beautifull.
