Tens of thousands of religious leaders and religions constantly struggle to bring faith and the awareness of faith to the people they pray and share life with weekly and daily. In todays world simply sharing faith and the belief in it demands a “faith and hope” that few of us will ever have. I consider associating an architect with faith and then extending that to educating people about faith to be nothing more than a way to gain momentary recognition. As if architecture and design needs to be a social media. To me, the essential problem is not using a design to also educate in faith, its sharing your own faith by living with the people. Do that and the education in faith will be transparently part of the process not an added design feature. And even better, not an inadvertent message to the people that they don’t have and don’t understand faith - and need your special design-for-faith insight to give them that. Rather than a design “add-on” just design a space I want to in, that feels welcoming to all. And let me, my friends and community fill it with our own faith.

Tnx 4 interesting question! It seems that the art of Islamic architecture tries to manifest the unity of God through colors, forms, lights and sounds, and in other words, the meaning. Islamic architecture is looking for inspiration from the concepts of the divine word and narration in an effort to create a single spiritual space that compares the world of the kingdom and the world, and the motifs, shapes and colors are a clear sign for inducing hidden meanings and the audience can understand through the presence of the architectural space. But you also have a special and unique culture that continues to share and teach one another about their meanings. In that way the building and you culture already contain the elements to support "faith". I am sure I lack knowledge of the stories and meanings. If I visited I doubt the architecture would support my sense of "faith". However I know I'd prefer the pattern, shapes and colors in your buildings to the utter "plainness" in the ones in my country. An Islamic architectural design, placed in my country, separated from your communities's shared cultural history.... I doubt... by its design ..... would educate us in faith. However, if you came here, with no architecture designs, told us of your history, your people and the way you live and try to include faith in your lives that, the personal sharing of life experiences, would do much more to "educate" us about your faith and faith in general........ "educate" is not the appropriate word.....by sharing you'd bring faith and friendship. I don't know of any building design that can (or should try to) do that....

How can one distinguish an excellent spiritual space from a bad one, a high quality from a low, a good one from an evil one? We ourselves are a faith base architectural design (God made man in his own image). Also, many civilizations great kings, queens, pharaohs, etc made their great architectural structures in the faith that they were the sons/daughters of gods. It still exist today.

I tell my colleagues that the most perfect spatial experience is an experience similar to praying experience in a Masjed... Being Enveloped and sheltered by the place yet feeling connected to the entire universe... Being in a public space yet knowing that your experience is individualistic and customized... having all your senses stimulated... and your thoughts challenged... sharing a place with strangers yet feeling a connection with them even if you've never had known them... feeling the safety and privacy and ownership and empowerment in the experience... having a community without intensive power dynamics and much complexity of boundaries and policies... the identity of the user and the place merging together and shaped by one another... etc

Then we try to carve and create this Spatial experience in the projects we work on...

I don't know if Architecture can educate about faith or about anything whatsoever by design, but I'm sure that Architecture is an intuitive product by faithful beings...

I do not think that my statement is aimed at changing your beliefs with the help of unlawful ethical and moral norms of the conversation. so I think people can design for a variety of faiths although those precedents weren't intended designs...

Spatial experience in places of worship have common factors and at essence can be considered one universal emotional connections formed by "scale, Light and shadow, Rhythms, Textures, Acoustics...etc)... yet it differs in meanings and values and massages that Architects or communities try to convey through architecture...and actually I think that Architects some times make a big mess of those meanings and values and end up creating materialistic Spatial Experiences that might mislead people's faith... or maybe their faith is materialistic, political, Ideological that tends to manifest in their architecture... so the phrase still applies...

However, in there, often among strangers, I find people of faith. Who, with none of the usual artifacts of their cultural history, nor a shared language, smile and make me feel welcome. I’ll hear their prayers but not know the meaning. But our prayers share the same sound.

I believe that architectural spaces restructure human relations and thus faith for every person in society through his experience of architectural space and access to the moment of instantaneous interdependence between the impact of images and what is hidden in his memory.
