I think what you mean is that the funder should have their names published as one of the authors. I think that is not correct because the funder is not the one who is involved in the actual content of the work. Surely they have a role in the fact that the research take place at all, but that is a different point from being the one who thinks about the project and actually carries it through. So the funder should be acknowledged as one who fully or partially supports the project, but not as one who does the project themselves.
I fully agree with Soraj Hongladarom. Financial support should be fully acknowledged in the Acknowledgements section, but the funding institutions should not be named as authors of a research paper. Authors are only those people who make significant contributions to the reported research work.
It is well known that funders are only acknowledged in the acknowledgment section. Because funders are usually agencies or organizations not personal. However, authorship is related to the persons who actually contributed in the experiment
I do agree with Soraj Hongladarom. Moreover, there is another delicate question related to this problem : when researchers get financial support, by private or public institutions, are they free enough to criticize (when necessary) the same institutions ? (If you accept funding institutions as authors, of course you won't be free : self censorship will potentially influence your research and your conclusions, and funding institutions will feel free to influence you in a wrong direction, because of their own issues)
No, because the author has to contribute substantially to the conception and design of the study, the acquisition of data, or the analysis and interpretation. Aknowledgement is enough for the funding agents
Typically, funding should be only acknowledged. Although funding sources are very important, but this could not considered a contribution. Recently, I read in contribution part of a paper that some authors (who have funding or affiliated to rich countries) provided the funding. Based on this situation, I assume that these authors mostly did not contributed to the work!
It's just crazy academic capitalism. Who pay not work for knowledge, just use money. Must be recogniced to use money for knowledge. But what kind of author is he/she/them? No. Just acknowledgment
The problem was solved elegantly in geography -- the person who discovered a new island had the right to name it as (usually he) wished. So many islands and border lands held the names of sponsoring persons or institutions (like Admiralty Islands). So you can keep your sole authorship of the paper but present in it a solution of 'Volkswagen Foundation's theorem'.
Somebody may try to buy authorship, but the truth will be revealed soon.
Please remember the story of Mozart's Requiem. No one now remembers the name of a person who ordered that piece and wished to present it as his own creation, but the Mozart's Requiem will remain one of the greatest musical compositions forever.
Yes, without financial support my articles, especially those with high publication fee, cannot be published. I need to find sponsors and give them authorship in return.
Financial contribution is a way to support the work of authorship, but it isn't a real part of it. You can't buy a qualification of authorship without doing the work. Free authorship is based on the risk of non finding financial contribution. But of course, most people will not accept this cruel reality and will choose to sell its soul for simply to be published. In this perspective, I do agree with necessary acknowledgment without sharing authorship.
Louise Lambrichs this is a very good statement, and it's exactly the way it should be. However, I'm afraid that reality often looks different, especially in poor countries where research funding is scarce or non-existing.
All scientific publications have a financial support of some sort. However in no case we put the name of the sponsor(s) as author of a scientific paper we just thank them in the paragraph acknowledgements
In an ideal world funding a project should not be able to buy authorship. However as scientists we should recognize the reality of this situation. Whilst we all agree that allowing authorship to be bought is undesirable, as highlighted above for many otherwise unfunded researchers it has to be accepted.
The high quality research needs high fund and without good fund researcher cannot do high quality research. Therefore, usually the authors follow the role of the funder to get a fund and do high quality research. All authors prefer to write only acknowledgement to the funder. However, if the funder insist to be author. At this time, the researchers have two options: 1) Stopping researches or doing low quality research. OR 2) Accept to add funder as author.
In my opinion, we must respect the opinion of authors who select first or second option.
In the real world, yes! We consider the financial support as a type of research contribution that deserve authorship. The financial support is very important to do research and publish a paper.
"If the funder insist to be author.... At this time, the researchers have two options: 1) Stopping researches or doing low quality research. OR 2) Accept to add funder as author".
A third option should be tried first: to convince the funder that money deserves recognition, but does not pay authorship
I believe that a funder who was not otherwise involved in data collection but who revises the manuscript, approves it, and takes responsibility for the content fulfils the ICMJE criteria for co-authorship. http://www.icmje.org/recommendations/browse/roles-and-responsibilities/defining-the-role-of-authors-and-contributors.html
I believe all most scientific publications in some countries financially support the researchers, On the other hand, researchers bear cost research from A to Z without any funding in poor countries.
Yes, most of research needs financial support. If the funder is actually involved in the experimental work, such as idea providing, experimental process, data collection and analysis, paper revision, etc, his name can be presented in the author list. However, if not, then it is unreasonable to add their name in a paper. Their contribution may be demonstrated in the acknowledge part.
