Can we assess health related quality of life (HRQOL) among dengue patients by using short form 36 version 2 questionnaire (SF36v2). One of my friend told me that HRQOL is usually assessed for chronic conditions, not for acute illness e.g. dengue, typhoid or some other diseases that can be resolved within 1 week.
Kindly guide me in this regard, because I am assessing HRQOL for dengue patients in my project. Actually, my objective is to compare HRQOL among dengue patients with and without acute kidney injury. The purpose here is to determine that either occurrence of acute kidney injury in dengue infection cause poor quality of life or not? (It means we will compare quality of life in two dengue groups, one with kidney injury and other without kidney injury), as dengue infection causes kidney injury.
Quality of life is a multidimensional construct that is used for several reasons, one of which is that It taps into so many important concepts, including well-being, health, etc. Some of these are chronic and stable, but others are more flexible and responsive to stimuli such as psychological distress.
If you focus on the psych distress, you will have a part of QOL that is quite mutable. I would look at several factors in dengue fever. I do not know this area, but dengue occurs from fasting, does it not?. Are you going to look at factors that preceded this exposure or just factors that preceded the acute outcome? Lots to think about. If you use distress as a potential predictor, is there a way to estimate it before the outcome, kidney failure. If you only have distress after the fact, isn't this result a foregone conclusion. I can not imagine persons without kidney failure having as much distress as those who do. Receiving dialysis is not exactly fun....... or am I missing something.

yes, you can use Sf-36 to measure HRQL among dengue patients to calculate QALY. However, you might want to consider what validity measures you want to use to calculate QALY. SF-36 is a generic QALY questionnaire and consider many dimensions. Because this is a generic measure, what you are looking for is I think a specific QALY measuring tool for dengue.
