I've purchased a waterbased acrylic emulsion to be used on metal. However, after applying this coating on my carbon steel, the steel corrode immediately. I've been doing some reading and waterbased acrylic emulsion should not cause a metal to corrode, at least immediately. Any idea?
Looks to me like the flash-rust inhibitor in the emulsion isn't working well. Try another brand ;-)

what you have noticed was flash rust. This phenomenon is quite common when casting a waterborne acrylic binder on a metal surface without any surface pretreatment. In general, during the paint formulation, corrosion and flash rust inhibitors are added to the waterborne binder in order to prevent the above mentioned phenomenom to occur.
check the following pubblications that may are interesting to you; they are dealing with acrylic binders that are able to avoid the flash rust when applied on mild steel without the addition of any inhibitors.

I apologize for the question, but .... have you applied the coating following the technical data sheet guide regarding the substrate preparation and coating application as indicated by the manufacturer? Sometimes it possible to underestimate some important indications but it is surely not your case.
