Can water be used as dispersion medium to measure the particle size distribution of fly ash (to make wet measurements in a particle size analyzer.) What are the downsides of using water as dispersion medium for the above measurement? If water can not be used, what other dispersion medium can be used for making accurate measurements in a (wet) Particle size Analyzer?
Usually fly ash is measured dry. In times past, people would use alcohols (usually isopropylalcohol) for the measurement. Why not try it in water? Some components may react and yo'll see changes in the PSD - depends what type of fly ash it is. Take a look at:

Look for 3 things in the measurement - stability, stability, and stability.
2-Propanol (iso-Propyl alcohol) is the usual dispersion media, employed to measure PSD of Portland cement, for instance. If your Light scattering instrument can also recirculate and apply simultaneous ultrasound, better. If not, dry also works (although some aggregates can be present). But Water, as Rawle wrote, is the worst option.
