Is it safe to train lay volunteers (e.g. in an African village) in extremely basic IV fluid administration for emergency cases (e.g. severe dehydration)? I emphasize the word 'basic' - only normal saline used, only used in emergency cases when benefits outweigh risks, etc.

If it is, what safety considerations are important to consider?
