History has little evidence (save a few) to show that scientists can become successful businessmen. Scientific output (and the 'science') of scientists and the 'science' (or the 'art') of 'Business Management' are perhaps quite different. (and often both are not cultivated/ mastered together).
Patenting, unlike earlier years, these days helps/ protects (to a great extent) on the 'business' potential (and the possible financial returns) of the scientific output.
Tillman Gerngross, the Scientist Turned Scientific Businessman
Tillman Gerngross is a Professor of Bioengineering at the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth College, and an Adjunct Professor in the departments of Biology and Chemistry at Dartmouth. Gerngross has been an active inventor and to date his work has resulted in the founding of two companies (GlycoFi, Inc. and Adimab LLC.) and over a dozen U.S. and international patents.
