I am wondering if the FTO glass can be used as a working electrode without connecting the glass to copper wire. On other words, an alligator clip from the potentiostat is directly attacked to the FTO glass acting as a working electrode.
If you are using FTO glass as a substrate for a perovskite cell, yes, the FTO can acts as a working electrode, especially because one side of FTO would be covered with conductive materials.
Yes you can use it as a working electrode in a 3 configuration cell after a the cleaning process to study the behaviour of the FTO in a common solvent and electrolyte and a redox probe to access the electron transfer process and the potential will be vs a reference electrode, usually I firstly use common working electrode and a pt wire as a counter electrode to access the electrochemical window of the electrolyte, then the electrolyte plus redox probe. in a second approximation I use the PET-ITO or FTO as working electrode and the same counter and reference electrodes and compare the results, don't forget they could have different areas. Finally I used the FTO both as working electrode and other as counter electrode vs the reference. Just after this study I use a 2 configuration electrode for electrochromic cell or other application. I hope I cloud be of assistance.
