Hello dear it will depend on the pH because if the is >7 these group will be as carboxilates. In the case opposite they are be as acid groups.

Thank you for your response. The pH of the phosphate buffer was 7.4. When I placed my hydrogel in the buffer containing methyl red, the hydrogel turned red and the color persisted till 5h after which, it vanished. I have attached the photographs of hydrogel taken after 1h and 6h. Can you clarify what must have happened?
