Since composites are nearly five time lighter than the conventional alloys and can withstand high stresses, no lubrication is needed.
Composites were lighter but during the welding of composite may form some intermetallics which retards the properties of the matrix material.
Eg. When Al-SiC Metal matrix composite is melted and after the solidification there will be Aluminum Carbide (Al4C3) and Silicon (Si) formation will occurs.
Here Si gives brittleness to the matrix and Al4C3 gives brittleness and also it is more vulnerable to corrosion. But Aluminium alloys are more corrosion resistant.
So manufacturing and processing methods on the metal matrix composite plays a major role.
High strength does not necessarily correlate with high wear resistance. Take a look at tribological research on the materials you think are suitable.
