Why we always bother all with the rate of success and all, why cant we measure success on a failure scale. A failure cannot be a null success, but a success may be a null failure as said and as seen in many legends. can we think of re engineering our thoughts over this?
A good philosophy is to think one either succeeds or learns. Hence there is no need for the word failure :-)
Failures occur to components or systems not people.
So you may want to change the question.

This is a good question with lots of possible answers.
In addition to @Paul Howard Riley's excellent observation, you may want to consider the quality of a result as a means of measure success. Then the language in the post for this thread can be translated in the following way:
zero quality (total failure) yields no success.
low quality (near failure) yields less sucess.
high quality (near perfect) yields high sucess.
