Need to advise students on novel and cost effective research topics and areas.
I use the tool CES Edupack to expand the knowledge base of the students: The material selection with proper reflection on the selection criteria is a required skill for them.
For applications, I teach my polymer-related research combined with virtual prototyping of polymer and metal parts. Within this topic, I focus on cost saving and defect prevention.
In my opinion, please consult with a industry to find out their problems. I feel, our research objective is to give solution to the regular problems faced by the industries. It would reduce the cost of research and the industry will be happy get a solution of their problem.

A big thank you Anjan Prodhan researches geared toward solving industrial problems is the key, but linkage of research institutions with industries is not really working over here. I believe with personal iniative one can build such linkages.

Francis Edoziuno, CES Edupack (and I guess other exist), is a material and manufacturing database where the students can do filtering based on the material requirements for a certain application.
The students need to list the requirements for a given application, and then search the database with e.g. 6 requirements to physical properties.

I think research on composite materials and study the microstructure on nano size and correlate with nowadays problem on material and with mechanical problems also...
