I am using the total suspended solids methods to quantify algal growth. The standard calculation I am using is (weight of filter + dried residue (mg) - minus weight of filter (mg)) x 1000, divided by sample volume (ml) to get dry cell weight of algae (mg /L). However I have just read an article which calculates it by : (weight of filter + dried residue (mg) - minus weight of filter (mg)), divided by sample volume (ml), which I think is incorrect. I hope the one mentioned is also correct. If you want to check the dry weight of algae in a sample volume of 10ml, you have to divide your answer by 10 and then multiply by 1000 to get mg/L.
Dry mass mg/L = [ (weight of filter + dried residue (mg) - minus weight of filter (mg)) / volume used ] X 1000
