im looking to model an object moving at an inital velocity on a horizontal surface and need to estimate a stopping time for the obect, can someone suggest a friction model to fit this problem ?

I began with solving m.dv/dt=-bv where b is a damping coefficient and solving for v this doesn't allow me to determine a stopping time so I am looking for an alternative friction model
Following to Adolfo Senatore and Alessandro Ruggiero propositions, I can add the advice to use energetical approach. The equation in terms od kinetic energy of body and energy dissipated due friction allow you to calculate the time of stopping. Best regards
It depends on the problem. What do you want to study?
For instance, if you study Stribeck effect, you need an exponential or polynomial definition of friction coefficient.
