You can used in complement of these analyses the magnetic susceptibility measure that evaluates the proportion of ferromagnetic particules. This analyse, in your context, could trace detrital inputs coming from continental fresh water. But in general, it's necessary to complete SM meassure with another analyses to determine the real signification of the signal. Indeed, for exemple pedogenetic processes release also such elements. 

In my case, I have completed SM analyse with geochemical analyse, and I observe a good correlation between detrital elements (Al, Fe, Zr, Ti, etc.) and high SM values. In contrast, organic environments records low SM values. SM values are anto-correlated with P, LOI or Ca. 

Anyway, in fluvial/marine paleo-environmental studies, SM is largely employed, but that's depends of the goals of your study of course.

Hi, The 210Pb dating will work only for the last ~200 yrs. For older samples, you have to try either radiocarbon dating or foraminiferal stable oxygen isotopic stacking method. You can try foraminiferal studies (but you should know, how to identify a foraminifera). A lot of literature is available online. You will get them in plenty in marine sediments.

in the case of Mediterranean sediment cores the total organic carbon (TOC) could provide useful information on sapropels, while MS, various detrital elements (CaCO3 %) and element ratios (Ti/Al) are useful to identify e.g. Saharan dust addition. Some other parameters: radiogenic isotope compositions 87Sr/86Sr, 143Nd/144Nd ratios, and pollen-analyses would be also great.

For dating: d18O (foraminifera)

First one should be clear what are you aiming to address accordingly suggestions can be provided.

According to plenty of previous related research.Proxies and methods used for  reconstruction of Paleo-environment in coastal&estuarine areas,especially based on sediment in borehole can be summarized as follows:Grain size analysis,Sedimentary facies analysis,Element geochemistry(carbon,nitrogen and ratio),Magnetic susceptibility,Polen and spore,Foraminifera,and mineral analysis.Maybe AMS14C and OSL,Paleomagnetic are good choices for the dating of 300m long borehole.

I'm still a fresher in the related research,maybe some mistake in what hasbeen mentioned above.I hope there are some useful information above.

I take three different steps.

1.Make use of non-destructive methods by capturing digital data (gamma ray, magnetic susceptibility, micro-resistivity with the Wenner Array)

Advanced level: core scanning for structures, textures... and chemical analysis, including portable XRF. This depends upon the goal of your work. There are more non-destructive methods

2. Take one half of the core slap for mineralogical analyses:

Grain size analysis with the CAMSIZER (sand only)

Separation of grain size fraction

- clay mineralogy < 20µm

- heavy and light minerals 20 to 300 µm

- take a larger rock chip for thin section

Clay mineralogy is performed using XRD + IR spectroscopy + CEC-SEM-EDX/WDX

Heavy minerals routine analysis (under the petrographic microscope) advanced level SEM- WDX/EDX or EMP

3. Take the second half for chemical analysis

- XRF (more than 40 elements)

-ICPMS (trace elements + REE)

4. Age dating depends upon the age expected and your goal

I can only add, that if you want to calculate the accumulation rate of sediment component, you need to determine a linear sedimentation rate and density of dry sediment (accumulation rate of sediment component = concentration of component (%content)×linear sedimentation rate×density of dry sediment). Correspondingly, it is necessary to determine the density of wet sediment and humidity of sediment (= porosity). The density of wet sediment and humidity of sediment (= porosity) can be measured both by the standard (classical) methods and by non-destructive methods.

According my research experience, if I have the cores, I will do that for the lists.

The first step, I will do MSCL testing, get the physical parameters.

The second step, I will do XRF scanner got the chemistry parameters for the major element.

And the same times, I will take photo by camera and analysis the reflecting rate of the color.

The third step, I will pick up the marco-fossil and identify that.

The fourth step, I will consider do any other analysis.

I think that you could investigate REE, Zr and Hf distributions in sediments in order to discriminate between detrital and authigenic minerals. You could discriminate among different sediment fractions to evaluate what trace elements are related to carbonates, Mn-Fe oxyhydroxides, detrital minerals and so on. Hi there, plenty of helpful suggestions above. I agree with the methods/techniques suggested. Anoher very interesting method is micro-computed tomography (Ct-Scan). This gives you high resolution imagery of the core. Then you can do 2D analysis of your various components (based on their density which is translated in Housnfield unit). To me the most interesting aspect is to be able to conduct a 3D reconstruction of the core which is super interesting to image structures. I have used it a lot with permafrost cores. It all depends on the objective of the project. However Geochemistry( major, Trace , REE, Stable isotope) would give good results for multipurpose results.

Hi. Usually 137 Cs geochronology is perfomed in order to confirm 210 Pb results.

Maybe you can make some analysis,such as grain size, lithology, pollen, dinoflagellates, diatom, foraminifera and so on.
