I used an Olympus recorder before, and had difficulty clearly differentiating voices. I will be using this recorder for adolescents, typically in groups no larger than 8. I thought about going with this expensive microcone one -- http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AM6AERG. Please advise if you have good experiences with this or others.
Try to get a recorder specifically built for this purpose. Echoes can cause problems.
At a minimum, get a Stereo recorder and record in stereo. That will sort out some
voices in different positions.
I utilized the Olympus DM-620 digital recorder with satellite microphones at a conference table with my focus group. The sound quality was excellent and it was easy to differentiate the various voices. I had a total of five of us at a conference table with two satellite microphones plus the recorder. Depending on the number of satellite microphones you purchase, you can easily accommodate the group size you are thinking of using. The quality accommodates courtroom recording.
