Greetings from your neighbour institution! I have been developing teaching resources for systematic reviews in a business context of late. The whole field came from medical research originally. There is a very useful summary article by Hemingway and Brereton called "What is a systematic review?" which I would recommend for starters then look for systematic reviews in the construction literature to see what your subject area conventions are.

The methodology is known as a systematic review protocol. It should clearly explain the scope of your review, the sources you plan to use (e.g. databases and keywords) and the criteria for selecting articles.

Finally, I would recommend developing your conceptual framework earlier in your study (i.e. after your introduction and before your methodology).

Considering that you are using literature and a conceptual framework, you need to answer a few questions and considerations as you go along to design the methodology.

1. There are many types of literature reviews: argumentative review, integrative review, historical review, methodological review, systematic review, and theoretical review. Sometimes narrative and comprehensive literature is referred to be the traditional literature review. Systematic reviews select positivism which indicates quantitative methodology as you are synthesising the results of a number of many small studies. The traditional review goes for comprehensive review which is the interpretivism.

2. Define your goals, objectives and research questions. Your research journey goal is the destination whereas your methodology is the route.

3. What is the purpose? Is it a deductive, inductive, pragmatism?

Do you want to confirm or test a theory or hypothesis? In this case, you need a quantitative analysis. This also means it is deductive nature.

Do you want to develop or understand a concept, thought or experience? Then you need a qualitative method. This also means it is inductive by nature.

Some researchers also prefer to use a mixed approach by combining both quantitative and qualitative. However, this approach needs explaining dominancy in discussions.

4. Existing literature becomes your population where you go data collection methods: sampling and sampling strategy, inclusion and exclusion criteria; search strategy - which databases and which search terms; data analysis which includes either appraising the data or synthesis of the data.

Appraising the data involves findings and relationship related to the research question and contribution to existing evidence.

5. Complete the research cycle reflecting on the issues, and followed by recommendations
