I want to fabricate a fsp tool with pin dia 5 mm and shoulder dia 18 mm. I want to create concentric scroll feature on its shoulder. The material of tool is MS and I want to know that which operation will produce this feature.
If you have a CNC machine, it should be able to do this job. Otherwise, get hold of a local machinist to do the job for you.
If you are planning to process Al or Mg alloy, use tool steel material for the tool. Make sure it is not hardened before it is machined to get to required dimension and geometry. After that you can subject it to hardening heat treatment before using it for FSW.
I second what Nilesh mentioned:
For soft material you can fabricate it with a CNC.
For steel it is better if you purchase it.
I worked with a 6.4 mm diameter tool and had hard time machining it due to the small feature sizes. Ended up buying ready tools.
It is possible by CNC machine. We reported our small study in a journal with different shoulder profiles.
