I am working on identifying the origin of an invasive anuran using mtDNA genetic markers and have found only two similar papers. These are the phylogeography of Bufo marinus (=Rhinella marina) (Slade and Moritz 1998) and a more recent paper by Kuraishi et al 2009 looking at the origin of Polypedates leucostymax in Japan. Does anyone know of similar studies on other invasive anurans such as Lithobates catesbeianus or Eleutherodactylus coqui?

I know an example from an exotic slug, look for Meghimatium pictum in the attached paper.

Best example I know is:
Brawley et al. 2009 PNAS. However it wasnt purely mtDNA (some microsats).
Also, Blakeslee et al 2008 Molec Ecology uses mtDNA. Doesnt pinpoint the exact site of origin but gets the continent!

Whereas using mtDNA under some circumstances might be OK, is clear by now that using mtDNA ONLY is not the way to go, as more often than not mtDNA will not behave neutrally. Doing barcoding is controversial but might be good to solve relationships, however trying to estimate demography (as you intend) with only one marker will very likely result in bad estimates.

We demonstrated a founder effect in the ascidian Ciona savignyi in New Zealand using COI from its native range in Japan.
