Can salt treatments of seeds prior to sowing mitigate disease infestation on crops? I have the vision that solute concentration will counter attack the plant parasites.
Pre sowing seed treatment where seeds are soaked in water, mineral solutions viz., CaCl2, ZnSO4, cobalt sulphate/chloride, K2SO4, KH2O4, CuSO4, sodium molybdate, boric acid, manganous sulphate and other (Mariappan et al., 2013) or growth regulators viz., ascorbic acid, kinetin, benzyl adenine, GA, CCC and other (Agboola, 2003 and Kumaran et al., 1993) alone or in combination found to speed up germination process, increased germination rate and seedling vigour, improved resistance to water and salinity stress and increased crop yields (Pandey and Sinha, 1995; Krishnaveni et al., 2010).
Thank you Dr. Suresh K Malhotra for your the up to dated information and recently published material you provide me for my question in my hypothesis and some findings on Lathyrus sativus and Zea may I have conducted based on NaCl and CaCl2 pre sowing treatments with increased germination process, emerging seeds uniformity, germination rate increment, and seedling vigour, improved resistance to water and salinity stress and increased crop yields (Tsegay and Gebreslassie, 2014) and other in press on Zea mays.
Salt priming is a technique for improving germination rate and field establishment of crops, particularly under stressful conditions. It could also mitigate pathogen attack on seeds, especially if you add a fungicide to priming solution. Early emergence of the seedlings from primed seeds enable them to better use of resources, leading to the production of uniform and vigorous plants which are tolerant to biotic and abiotic stresses. Seed priming also enhances field emergence of seedlings, enabling optimum plant establishment under a wide range of environmental conditions.
Thank you Dr. Kazen Ghassemic-Golezani. Are they research starting on mitigation of pathogen attack on seeds by priming with the addition of fungicides. If so would you mind please attaching it with one PDF sample?
