In our pig model, respiratory alkalosis was triggered by hyperventilation, (blood PaCO2 and bicarbonate decreased, pH was maintained, thus it is a compensated respiratory alkalosis). I was wondering if the respiratory alkalosis have negative impacts on intestinal epithelial viability or tight junction complex?
It is a rarely studied area, the only relevant reference I found is by Charney 1983 but it does not provide a direct answer to my question. It is reported that the water, sodium and chloride absorption in ileum is decreased by respiratory alkalosis.
Any opinions, case study or established theory relevant to this topic are welcome. Thank you very much.
