You are on the right track. The question today is to give a much greater say to citizens and, importantly, on a much shorter time span than election schedules which are ridiculously slow in a world where everything accelerate.
No need for research, there is a living and functionning example of it: Switzerland.
True political science can not survive without democracy, as well as democracy can not live without political science. Other political disciplines as, for example, "scientific communism" in well known totalitarian countries, do not count in this respect. Political science has implications as deeper research field by projects and science publications, as well as political science plays an important role by mass media comments in press, television/radio, internet portals, social networks - in democracy, and - for democracy.
I enjoyed reading the article in The Loop linked in the initial discussion post. I would emphasize the importance of political science in promoting political education.
