When washing Cu-salt after a PEG-modification reaction, some papers report passing a basic alumina column would work. But when I tried it, I found most of the PEG product adsorbed on the column. I wonder if anyone have experience of doing it. Can it work? How much percent of PEG can obtain at last? Thanks

Is it purification step you are following after polymerization, could you please be more specific. I think if you want to remove the CU(II) catalyst after polymerization (as in case of ATRP), then the process is ok, but you need to dilute your solution and use a good solvent to fully dissolve your sample (absolute ethanol or methanol/THF) but rarely use water because of the high affinity of Cu(II) for water and filter 3 times to get white polymer (colourless). If your polymerization is successful, then after precipitation (absolute ether) you will get your desired polymer, otherwise you need to control experimental parameters.

Did you deactivate the alumina with water prior to use? Would you consider to convert the copper(II) into the tetra amine complex for aqueous extraction? Maybe filtration through a cation exchange resin would be the quickest route. However, a size exclusion cardridge with an exclusion limit well below your compound mass would probably work as well...
We use C18 HPLC column to purify PEG-Peptide conjugates. Solvent system in our case is acetonitrile/water/0.1% TFA. Maybe this works for you as well.
