Our study requires the injection of peanut lectin into hyperglycemic mice. One of our concerns is whether the peanut lectin we plan to use will cause an allergic reaction in some mice, as peanut is a known allergen. Thank you!
Any protein from any source is potentially an allergen. But the allergic reaction will not occur on first injection, so if you are only injecting a single dose there should not be any problem.
When a subject is repeatedly exposed to the same allergen and the subject is genetically predisposed to develop allergy, the likelihood of allergy, in this case to lectin, is high.
On the other hand, there are different sources of lectin, some come from the melon, the soybean, the bean or some grasses.
