Individual factor like IQ, Motivation, age, gender, attitude etc. and environmental factors like reputation, resource allocation, work atmosphere, colleques etc.
As long as there is incentive like research grants, working towards a degree or promotion faculty will engage in research. At least from where I come from.

As a healthy professional, without research is difficult to promote knowledge. Research innovates the career and the team and self faculty. Problems o dilemmas underlying professionals and students will demand research that will respond thier questions.
