I wonder if the increased cytotoxicity and IL-6 release might be a result of PAH-FAME nanoparticles (NPs) formed in the exhaust from cars fuelled with bio blended diesel. The theory of increased bioavailability of PAH, resulting from these NPs "carrying" the PAHs into the cells, is interesting here. See a video simulating the formation of these NPs:
