Hello,
Is it possible to use a partial immersion mercury thermometer in horizontal position? Measurement accuracy need to be 0.1 C, so I need to consider every detail. Does gravity effect accuracy?
In addition, is it appropirate to use these type of thermometers to measure the temperature of flowing fluid? Tempreature will be steady so no fast response is expected.

A mercury thermometer measures temperature by changing the volume of the mercury in the thermometer. You can answer your question very easily by rephrasing it as follows. Does the hydrostatic pressure produced by the column of mercury cause a change in the volume occupied by the mercury as a result of comprehensibility, comparable to the volumetric change produced by 0.1 C?

As Mr. Tavella explained, there can be no effect of compression (or stretch) due to gravity in this case. In addition, the mercury channel is too thin, so the surface tension does not allow the small interface of the mercury with the vacuum space to deform.

Gravity is pretty much negligible. However the uncertainty is high. I suggest to go for thermocouple sensors if u need accuracy of 0.1C
