Never use Methanol for milling, give sufficient amount of time between each cycle in order not to sum up the heat. Steel balls can be used in planetary ball mill. Keep a track of internal temperature inside the vile.
Yes, you can use ball milling. Self-ignition can be induced when resulting fine powder is exposed to air including oxygen. Inert atmosphere is recommended for ball milling, Even in the case of wet-milling using hydrocarbon media, hydrogen pick-up can occur and you should be careful during post-treatment, for example, at high temperature.
Of Course, Definitely you can use ball milling for mg alloys but may i know the composition of mg in that alloy. Because in mg alloys upto 2% of mg, as per as my knowledge no need of any inert environment. if it exceeds, then only you may need. Please check it out this.
I recommend to use planetary ball mill with ball to powder ratio 10:1. use SS milling balls and do the milling operation in Argon atmosphere. Do ball milling in intervals e.g. 10 mints rest for 10 mints of milling. Depending on initial size of the Mg powder you can run the ball milling for hours. take sample out in the glove box (argon atmosphere) after each hour and characterize it using XRD & SEM.
